Lindo quilombo and the adc junior award ….

Last week we got the message that our book won a prize at the ADC Junior Awards: a »silver nail« in the category literature. it was the first time that the Art Directors Club awarded its well known »nails« also to juniors.

We are so proud and happy to receive this price and want to thank all the people who took part at our project and supported us so greatly! This price wouldn't have been possible without you!

The price came at a point of time when we almost resigned and lost hope that the project would be realized somewhen. Now for sure, there is a new motivation and energy to keep on trying and to find a publisher for the silver awarded book!

The title: Displays what came out: „Quilombo Lindo“- a beautiful chaos. We encountered an potpourri of styles, working methods, biographies, traditions and techniques. An apparent chaos, whose beauty arises just out of this complexity.

The first chapter: To make the context of the designers and their works fully understandable, we choose not only to fill this book with a collection of interviews with the designers, the book also contains two other parts: We begin the book with an interview with the German industrial designer, design-theorist and author Gui Bonsiepe who has been living and working in South America since the 60’s. He guides the reader through the history of South America and he is making a major contribution exemplifying the history of the Argentinian design and its connection to the hfg Ulm.

The second chapter: We present the biggest design conference in South America, which is located in Mar del Plata, 600 km south of Buenos Aires. The interview with Sebastián Valdivia, one of the two founders and organizers of the congress, talks about the congresses history in connection with the development of Argentinian design and its relevance towards it. With the help from further interviews with the international participants of the congress, we give a trans-cultural glance upon Argentina and with a combination of interviews and photos of Argentina we create a feeling for country, people and design.
The third chapter: Takes the reader into the midst of the “Lindo Quilombo”, the beautiful chaos: the design capital of Argentina – Buenos Aires. Exciting interviews and works with and by 30 different designers are waiting to be read. The reader is introduced to the city towards several photo-graphies of buenos aires combined with quotations from the interviews.

After the presentation of the diploma, we had the chance to exhibit our project for three days together with the other graduates at the university. The following pictures give an impression of the exhibition.

gui bonsiepe

Our last interview brought us to La Plata a city, 60 km southeast of Buenos Aires to visit Gui Bonsiepe, who graduated at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm in Germany. Since 1968 he has been living in Southamerica working in programms for the developement of industrial design. He has been teaching as a professor in several latinamerican and european universities, for example the KISD in Cologne. He is an author of various books and essays since the mid 1970`s, for example »Democracy and Design« and the latest book, which he wrote with his partner Sivia Fernandez »Historia del Diseño en América Latina y el Caribe«. Together with Tomás Maldonado Gui represents the axis »Buenos Aires-Ulm-Zürich-Mailand« who had an important influence on the developement of Argentinian design. Hence it was indispensable to talk to Gui and get to know more about design history and his experiences in South America.

It was probably the most unusual interview we had, starting with a big »parilla« in the countryside together with Gui and Silvia, Germaine Bonifacio and Professor Heiner Jakob.

Today we`ve been to galeria turbo again, this time to catch up with the guys from the collective doma who are running the gallery: Matias Vigliano, Julian Pablo Manzelli, Orlio Blandini, and Mariano Barbieri. The collective was founded in 1998 by different personalities with different skills. Hence it was possible to work in a broad field of distinctive domains, such as streetart, motion graphics, film, toydesign and vj performances. Their artistic works always have a social or political background and sense while using graphic design as a tool to develope them.

»Roni to the Rescue« was a project doma initiated as a reaction towards the Argentinian crisis in 2001 when in two weeks 5 different presidents were nominated.

One of the several actions the doma collective did in the streets to arouse reactions from the people passing by.

It was a pleasure to get to know Ronald Shakespear, founder of Diseño Shakespear (www.shakespearweb.com). Today Ronald is heading the studio together with his two sons, Lorenzo and Juan and they are celebrating the studio`s 50th birthday this year. Besides others, the studio was crucial for the development of Argentinian design and also for the face of the City Buenos Aires. To name just a few examples: they designed the way finding system and branding for the underground (SUBTE), the Temaikén Biopark, the Municipal Hospitals signage and more than 1.600 corporate identities, including Banco Galicia, Duty Free Shop, Luigi Bosca and more. A selection of their works can be seen in Ronald`s latest book »Señal de Disño«. In 2008 the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (www.robert1peters.com) has honoured Ronald with the SEGD Fellow Award.

Blue Vertigo project which is a rich source for designers searching for anything. The platform presents links to pages offering free fonts, logos, sounds or whatever a designer might need.

Friday morning we had a very long and interesting conversation with Daniel Wolkowicz. He is professor for design at the FADU-UBA, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Universidad ORT in Uruguay and at the Universidad Maimonides. Besides his impressing academical engagement Daniel works in editorial and corporate design and founded his own publishing company called »Wolkowicz Editores«.

One of Daniel`s current projects is the designing of catalogues for the regulary changing art exhibitions at the gallery »Espacio«.

Santorini is one of Daniel`s more ancient but very successful projects. He created the product design company`s corporate design. Here we can see a collection of postcards showing different designers who worked for Santorini.

Today we got to know the three sympathetic members of Cinco, Loly Carnero, Mariano Sigal and Sebastian Sigal. The three have been working in different fields of design for big advertising companies until they founded their own collective Cinco. Within their collective they focus on taking enough time for each project to become a unique work and to use the computer as less as possible. Cinco works in various diciplines: film, photography, graphic design, illustration and modern arts as the three of them combine different knowledges and skills.

We met Cristian at his cozy home where he lives and works.

The illustration for »La Reina Mab« are based on William Shakespeare`s poem »The Veil of Queen Mab« from Romeo and Juliet.

It was a big pleasure to talk to Rubén Fontana, one of the most important Argentinian Designers who had a big influence and impact on the development of Argentinian Design. Rubén who also raised up the typographic department at the University of Buenos Aires, is Typographer and Creator of several fonts. During the now thirty years of his studio Fontana Diseño he and his team worked on several corporate identities for Argentinian companies like for example the »Telecom«.

Fontana Diseño also worked on a new identity for the products of the brand »Casalta«.

We spent this Friday afternoon with the Dosve team and interviewed its founder and General Creative Director Fernanda Valentini and Creative Director Vanessa Souss about their work and Argentinian Design. Dosve works mainly on Motion Graphics. Their work catches your eye through its imaginative handmade style.

»Paka Paka« is one of the biggest projects Dosve has been working on. During the project the Dosve team developed a new Branding for the Argentinian TV channel »Canal Encuentro« besides various openings and promotional works, all made with stop motion technique.

We met Hernan Mariano Lombardo at his shop Love you* which is situated in Palermo. The shop is not just a shop it serves as a platform for the various things Hernan is involved with. It is his studio Nasa*, the boutique for his own fashion label Puta and also provides a gallery for various artists. Hernan, who studied Design and Architecture, creates Interior Designs for shops, Fashion, Graphics and Arts. The most important inspiration he finds in music.

We met Florence Kohan at her sympathetic little studio where the Colorium team consisting of Flor, Melissa Scheinkmann and Marcos Farina developes its playful works.

The studio works on graphic design, illustration art, editorial design, animation, scenography and branding for TV and theatre.

We spent the afternoon at Sergio Manela`s house learning a lot about Argentinian Graphic Design and its history. Sergio who is Designer and Professor at the same time is famous for his book covers and calligraphic works. He also works on Brandings, Corporate Design, Posters and Guidance Systems.

Patricio Oliver presented his new collection of vinyl dolls, a spooky but sympathetic group of creatures called the »Cucos« in a pretty shop in San Telmo. The bizarre Cucos are living in a big voctorian house in the middle of the Horror Forest. They only exist to spread terror and anxiety. The presentation was accompagnied by spooky music especially composed by Ignacio Sniechowskie and by illustrations of the Cuscos. Thursday, 26th of November

This Saturday we met José Saccone, Daniel Mochi and Nicolás Sarsotti from Toki, their collective which was created during 2001 with the aim of drawing without precise purpose, but focusing on the satisfaction and passion of its members.

It is not possible to talk about a certain Toki style as the group uses various technics in craft work and digital art. All the three of them work as Graphic Designers teaching Typography at the UBA.

The »Postales Toki« are a selection of a wide range of illustrations that reflect the group´s soul with its different ideas, technics and expressions.

Wednesday evening we spent at the Zona de Obras studio which is headed by Designer and UBA Professor Marcelo Gabriele. The studio mainly works on Editorial Design and Artworks for Argentinian musicians. We started the fourth interview week in Buenos Aires with Andrés Banavera (aka »Larva«) and Lucas Lasnier (aka »Parbo«) from studio Kid Gaucho. Their work is a good example for the fusion of design and streetart. Kid Gaucho are cooperating a lot with the fashion branch. Today we met Leandro Barales and Lucas Mourelle from Estudio Pica. They are both students of design at the University of Buenos Aires (FADU) and tutors of design. In addition to that they already built up their own successful studio.

Their work concentrates on editorial design, web and multimedia.

The Art Direction of the »THC« magazine is one of Pica`s most important editorial projects. THC is not as it might seem an underground magazine. It is certainly renowned and publishes articles written by popular personalities like for example politicians, artists and authors.

The Paper »Aperiódico Psicoanalítico« is another editorial and typographic work by Pica.

We spent the afternoon at the nobrand shop in Palermo sharing some mate tea with Hernán Berdichevsky and Gustavo Ariel Stecher from ImagenHB. By turning old fashioned Argentinian clichés into modern icons the two designers created Argentinas new identity within their book »idarg« and thereby resulting brand named »nobrand«.

Tonight we visited the PechaKuga Night at the cultural centre Konex.

PechaKuga Night was devised in Tokyo in 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of »chit chat«, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It`s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. It was definitely a varied evening that presented interesting ideas from design to nanotechnology, photography, melonga, make up, music production and more. Tuesday, 27th of October

On Friday we were invited to the premiere of the new stop motion film teclopolis developed by Javier Mrad and his team from cancanclub. The short movie was an incredible work made with rejected old computer material like mouses, keyboards and disks. It told a little sad love story which was accompagnied by beautiful music. Of course the movie had to be celebrated on a party afterwards. Friday, 23th of October
